On learning to draw

There are two ways to learn to draw, with pen and with pencil.

to draw with a pencil teaches perfection. You can erase; you edit to perfection in loops of erasing.

to draw with a pen teaches how to make chicken salad out of chicken shit. It forces you to work around mistakes. All lines are permanent. A mistake must be drawn around, worked in.

Both teach confidence, with a pencil you know you just need more time to reach perfection, with a pen you know you can finish at any point by sleight of hand.

these are metaphores for life. We can always spend more time on soemthing to make it better. We can always turn a mistake into our advantage. Learn both. Do both.
